 ABOUT THE REGION: Lombardy is characterized by lakes, rivers, mountains, cities of art, oenogastronomy,
sport and leisure.
A sequence of lands, places, paths, each of them differentiated by unique natural and
cultural elements, some of which already renowned, whereas others still to be
discovered.
To have an overall idea of the great environmental diversity, which is one of
Lombardy's treasures, you should ideally go up to one of the big terraces on the roof
of the Duomo on one of those clear days when the wind has swept the sky clean.
Then, your eye can wander from the high alpine peaks and the foothills of the Alps
that form a ring around the region, towards the North, to the last offshoots of the
Apennines, smaller and further away in the south; between them, the great plain,
largely urbanized close to the city, but as it leaves the city behind, it gradually
regains a more rural character.
The Lombard mountains win us over with the majestic splendour of their peaks, the
stretches of ski slopes for all those winter sports enthusiasts, the gentle green
valleys, which have always been a preferred thoroughfare between Italy and Europe,
important communication routes along which travelled not only goods but also ideas
and culture.
Beneath the Alpine area, marking the transition between this area and the Po valley,
there is a series of postglacial lakes: Lake Maggiore, Lake Como and Lake Garda,
the biggest, but also Lake Iseo, Lake Varese, the small Lake Idro and the many others
that are dotted around the Varese area. |
